Constuído en las últimas décadas del siglo XVIII - antes de que fueron levantadas las paredes de la Matriz o el Cabildo - el local que fuera desde sus orígenes "la esquina pulpería de Juan Vázquez", es el comercio más antiguo de la ciudad. A esa condición agrega el trágico orígen del nombre primero asignado y luego asumido, derivado del asesinato - hacha mediante - de un dependiente de la pulpería, cuando corrían los últimos años de aquel siglo. El "almacén y bar" de la "esquina del Hacha" fue durante décadas centra de la vida del barrio "Guruyú" y consta que en sus mesas, un vecino cercano -Tito Cabano - escribiera el tanto "Un boliche", un "retrato" de justa fama. Hoy "El Hacha" ha renovado su oferta, adaptándose a nuevas demandas, pero no ha renunciado a su vocación de barrio ni le ha dado la espalda a su rica historia. Por eso vale. Built by the end of the 18th Century - before the Matriz Cathedral or the Cabildo were ever built -, the place which had originally been "la esquina pulpería de Juan Vázquez" is the oldest store in the city. To that condition, it is added the tragic origin of its name, which was firstly allotted to ir and then assumed by it: an employee was murdered there -with an axe - near the end of that century. On the 15th of April 1794, an empleyee of the "pulpería corner", Bernardo Paniagua, was murdered whit an axe by Domingo Gambini, who was attempting to rob him. This man was convicted in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and hanged in Montevideo. For decades the "grocery and bar" of the "esquina del Hacha" (corner of the Axe) was the heart of "Guruyú" neighbourhood. And it is said that at one of its tables a neighbour - Tito Gabano - wrote the tango "UN BOLICHE", a "portrait" of reasonable fame. Nowadays, "el Hacha" has renewed its offer, tuning in to the new demands. Nevertheless, it has not forgotten its neighbourhood vocation or turned its back to its rich history. There lies its wealth.
